The Young Kuryłowicz is the title of a volume published in 2004 by Wojciech Smoczyński on the
occasion of the 12th meeting of the Indogermanische Gesellschaft being held in Cracow, where Prof.
Jerzy Kuryłowicz taught between 1948 and 1965. It contains the five articles in which Kuryłowicz laid
the foundations of laryngeal theory as we know it today. I was entrusted with providing an English
translation of these articles originally written in French. The title emphasizes the freshness,
brilliance and elegance of Kuryłowicz’s early writings. These articles still make for inspiring reading
today, which is why I make my English translations accessible here with Prof. Smoczyński’s consent. Here
