About me

Born in Antwerp many years ago, I have been living and working in Lithuania for more than twenty years now. I am head of a small centre of general linguistics at Vilnius University. I teach various subjects of general linguistics, such as trends in contemporary linguistics, theory of grammar and syntax, and I also conduct PhD seminars. I was originally trained as a Slavonic scholar and much of my research is concerned with the Baltic and Slavonic languages. I have headed several international research projects based at Vilnius University, aiming at gaining new insights into the grammatical structure of the Baltic languages. For some twenty years, together with my wife Gina, I have organized small-scale summer schools of linguistics in Salos, a small village at the lakeside in North-Eastern Lithuania ( Linguists from many countries, mainly typologists, have taken part in them as invited speakers. I greatly appreciate the friendship and collegiality of the linguists who have collaborated with me on the Salos project as well as on the research projects. I owe them many inspiring moments as well as a magnificent present—a festschrift on the occasion of my 65th birthday ( It contains a wealth of wonderful articles just to my taste.

This webpage offers a list of my (mainly recent) research topics, each with a short presentation of the main ideas and bibliographical references. You will also find a list of my selected articles, many of which can be found on Academia and ResearchGate.
